Nice.\u00a0 It won\u2019t work, of course.\u00a0 Children are independent and they\u2019ll do as they damn well please.\u00a0 You can\u2019t even stop them from doing something that might harm them later (like drugs for example), so banning them from using products and services (like the\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipod\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipod\">iPod<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/\">Google<\/a>) which are way better than anything from\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\">Microsoft<\/a> is somewhat risible.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, whether or not brainwashing works, a better solution would be for Microsoft to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by Apple and Google.\u00a0 If Microsoft can make a better product than its competitors then its competitors will go out of business &#8211; after all, who would buy a product from a small company if the big one can do the job at least as well?\u00a0 I\u2019m not even thinking of search engines or music players any more.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of an operating system &#8211;\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macosx\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macosx\">Mac OS X<\/a> (which you have doubtless also banned your children from using).<\/p>\n<p>Windows is a leviathan.\u00a0 It commands so much market share that anyone buying a computer would be foolish not to buy Windows &#8211; unless there was a competitor at least twice as good.\u00a0 After all, you\u2019d need a damn good reason to throw away compatibility with the world&#8217;s most used OS.\u00a0 Windows has two such competitors.\u00a0 My favourite is Mac OS X and its feature set goes way beyond Vista but without the precipitous hardware requirements.\u00a0 Of course, Mac OS X requires you to have a computer made by Apple &#8211; but since you\u2019ll probably need a new computer to run Vista anyway, it\u2019s worth considering.<\/p>\n<p>Some people claim that they don\u2019t want to be locked in to a hardware manufacturer (as if being locked into an operating system is any better).\u00a0 Okay, I can sort of understand that.\u00a0 I run\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu<\/a> on my PC.\u00a0 I find that it\u2019s far more capable than Windows, more secure and (at least as far as I\u2019m concerned) easier to use.\u00a0 It looks nicer too, to my eyes, and it\u2019ll run on virtually any computer.\u00a0 It\u2019s free too.<\/p>\n<p>Some people will still object that they need to run Windows programs.\u00a0 In most instances, of course, they don\u2019t need to.\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\">Open Office<\/a> is Microsoft Office compatible (and free too), and there are many other applications that can be used in lieu of those written by Microsoft.\u00a0 On those rare occasions that a Windows program is required,\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.codeweavers.com\/products\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.codeweavers.com\/products\/\">Crossover<\/a> will run Windows programs natively on either Mac OS or Linux.<\/p>\n<p>So come on Steve, give me one good reason why your kids &#8211; or anyone else for that matter &#8211; should use Microsoft products? Oh, and \u2018because it\u2019s your company\u2019 isn\u2019t a good enough reason!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You confess to having\u00a0brainwashed your children.
